The Do’s & Don’t’s of March Break Travel

It is time to start thinking about our next big break: March Break. During this time, kids (and teacher parents) are off school and families flock down south or to the slopes, to make some memories.  Here are my tips for making the most of family travel during March Break:

Do decide as a family what type of trip you are looking for

Are you looking for somewhere to lie on the beach or are you looking to ride rollercoasters for your week away? A destination like Walt Disney World will require a lot of pre-planning while an all-inclusive will just require you to show up and relax. As a family, you need to decide what your priorities are, prior to starting your search. What is the best type of holiday for your entire family?

Do get travel insurance for the whole family – just like my family does!

Travel insurance can be helpful when vacationing during a busy season, especially a busy season that is also affected by unpredictable weather. Have you ever had a flight delayed because you were in the line to be de-iced?! I have. Nightmare!

Sometimes, flights can get cancelled, connections can be missed, luggage can get lost. Should any of these disasters happen, you can call a 24/7 emergency assistance team like the one Allianz has, and someone will be there to help you. One year, when on spring break in Florida, I was stung quite badly by a jelly fish and needed medical attention. Because we traveled with medical travel insurance, I was able to see a doctor and get the care I needed.

Do Pack Smart

When traveling with kids, it can be easy to overpack but don’t do it! Pack a carry on with snacks, games, diapers, a spare tee and wipes in a bag that will fit under the seat in front of you. Having it in the overhead compartment can be tough to access during the flight. Use a travel stroller to navigate the airport and always gate check. When it comes to all of your baby gear, call ahead to your destination accommodation and see what they can have ready for you when you arrive. Make your journey as light as possible.

Don’t leave booking until the last minute

Leaving your travel plans until the last minute can be both disappointing and expensive. Activities, resorts, planes may all be full and you will be forced to go with a second or third vacation choice. Alternatively, the remaining vacations may be priced very, very high. Holiday providers can take advantage of those who are humming and ha-ing over plans and can (/will) charge more for your trip away. I once watched an all-inclusive trip triple in price over a week.

Don’t forget vaccines

Once you’ve decided on your destination, take a quick peek at Canada’s Travel Health & Safety site. Some vaccines are mandatory for travel to a particular destination while others are suggested based on age and overall wellness of a traveller. It is always a good idea to be educated when it comes to your health.

Don’t stress the small stuff

Above all, remember that you are on holiday. Plans are often waylaid, details can be overlooked and yes, there will be a tantrum or two. Go with the flow and enjoy the highs and lows of a family vacation. Know that you are making memories and spending quality time together. You can’t top that.
