Why ‘shoulder season’ is the best time to travel

I sat down with Sid on Breakfast Television to talk about top destinations to visit during ‘shoulder season’

Here are some of my favourite shoulder season destinations and why you visit:

Banff, Alberta
The leaves start to change in late September/early October which makes Banff a beautiful
destination. It is still very sunny with stunning views of the mountains and water. Banff is high
on many international travel ‘must visit destinations,’ especially in the fall.
 Lots to do with the family: Hiking, Biking, Boating, Photography, Indigenous cultural
experiences
 Food + Drink: Craft Breweries, Park Distillery (handmade spirits), wild game meats (elk,
Bison, Venison), ‘Mountain to Table’ movement,
 Weather: 17-20 degrees Celsius, lots of sunny days, perfect for an active vacation

San Diego, California
 Lots to do with kids: Legoland, San Diego Zoo, La Jolla Beach, Balboa Park (California
starts school mid-late August, so you aren’t fighting crowds of kids)
 Food + Beer: Big craft beer scene, delicious Mexican food, fresh seafood from the Pacific
so lots of options (HUGE for fish tacos and ceviche)
 Weather: 250 sunny days a year. Average of 25 degrees Celsius

Italy
Europe is always a popular destination, especially since the pandemic. The problem with
summering in Italy is the crowds and recently, climate change, which makes the heat
unbearable. Visiting in late September-October, is a perfect time to visit.
 So much to see: Rome, Florence, Capri, Tuscany (can take part in harvesting grapes on a
vineyard)
 Food + Wine: Lots of food and wine tours, cooking lessons (sustainable travel),
museums, restaurants off the beaten path
 Weather: 20-30 during the day and 15-20 in the evening
