Last night, we kicked off Johnnie Walker Whisky Week by celebrating some of my favourite Dad’s and of course, the lovely Curious Creature. Together with our Johnnie Walker ambassador, Cameron, we sampled Red Label, Black Label, Gold Label Reserve, Platinum Label and the exclusive Blue Label. Black Label seemed to be the hit of the evening with the majority of Dads favouring this particular scotch. When we asked why, they said, ‘It’s smooth, smoky…the most well rounded. I can drink this.

We learned about the history of the Walker empire, their signature Scottish blends and the success of one of the world’s first global brands. The guys asked questions about casks, years of whiskies and Rye vs Bourbon vs Scotch. We paired single malts with strawberries and pepper, milk chocolate and dark chocolate. We tasted fruit, peat, burnt toffee, vanilla and more – It was a whisky whirlwind and I encourage you to organize your own JW home tasting before it is too late! Stay tuned for details on how to do this.

After the tutored tasting, the men enjoyed some whisky cocktails, burgers and ribs. They exchanged father tales of baby diaper blow outs, late night feeds and nauseaus Mommies-to-be. By the time the sun set, the Dads were fed, watered, whiskied and warmed. I think we can conclude that the evening was a huge success.

Did you know…?

Whiskey means “water of life”

In Gaelic, whiskey translates to uisce beatha or “water of life.”

The “e” in whiskey comes from fuisce, which comes from uisce beatha. When the Irish monks spread whiskey around Europe, no one could pronounce uisce beatha, so they called it fuisce.

“Uisce” actually sounds more like “Whiskey.” *

If you’re looking for a Scotch to make the perfect Manhattan, try a Johnnie Walker Gold Reserve.
